Rory McIlroy was interviewed by CBS journalist Amanda Balionis on Sunday, just days after his divorce from Erica Stoll sparked rumors of a romance between McIlroy and Balionis.
McIlroy shot a final-round 64 at the RBC Canadian Open at Hamilton Golf and Country Club, putting himself in contention as his encouraging form continued. Minutes later, he went in front of the cameras for a one-on-one interview with Balionis on CBS Sports.
Recent headlines have linked McIlroy and Balionis following McIlroy’s filing for divorce from Stoll, with Balionis also appearing without her wedding ring and no longer using her married name. However, reports this week stated that the pair are ‘not dating and only have a personal relationship’. They shared several laughs during Sunday’s interview, with McIlroy a couple of shots off leader Robert McIntyre.
When asked by Balionis if his score of 13-under-par would be good enough to win, McIlroy responded, “I don’t think so. I wish it was. I had a couple of good opportunities on the way in… selfishly it would be nice if it was enough. But Bob is a good friend of mine, a Ryder Cup teammate and it would be really good to see him get the job done.” He added, “We had a great weekend. It’s probably not going to be enough but it is definitely a really good weekend to build on.”
McIlroy and Balionis then joked about his pairing with Tom Kim, with McIlroy laughing and saying, “He definitely makes me feel old!”
This event marked McIlroy’s first PGA Tour outing since the PGA Championship at Valhalla, where he finished tied for 12th. This followed his win at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina last month. McIlroy, 35, filed to divorce Stoll, 36, just 24 hours after that victory.
McIlroy and Stoll had been married for seven years. The divorce papers were served by Carl Woods, a Palm Beach police officer who runs a process serving business, CW Services & Associates. Woods delivered the documents to Stoll at their $22 million marital mansion in Jupiter, Florida on May 13.
Balionis, meanwhile, married former NFL quarterback and Florida International University quarterbacks coach Bryn Renner in 2022. The pair reportedly got together in 2019 and spent more than four years as a couple before Balionis appeared publicly without her wedding band. Neither McIlroy nor Balionis has publicly commented on the rumors surrounding their relationship.
