Robert MacIntyre, the 27-year-old Scottish golfer, experienced a memorable week as he clinched his first PGA Tour victory at the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday, with his father, Dougie, serving as his caddie. This victory, achieved in MacIntyre’s 45th start on the Tour, provided significant job security and a boost in his professional career. It also came shortly after MacIntyre opened up about the challenges of living and playing in a different country, highlighting the loneliness and business-like nature of professional golf.
MacIntyre, who resides in the Orlando, Florida area, expressed his struggles with homesickness at the PGA Championship last month. He contrasted his life in America with his hometown of Oban, Scotland, where he enjoys the company of friends and family. In the U.S., it’s primarily just him and his girlfriend, striving to live a good life despite being far from their loved ones.
Despite these challenges, MacIntyre reaffirmed his commitment to playing on the PGA Tour, noting that he’s still figuring out life. His triumph on Sunday, marked by a final round of 68, gave him a one-shot victory over Ben Griffin and brought several benefits: entry into the final two Signature Events of the season, more events next year, a Masters berth, and PGA Tour membership extended through 2026.
The victory was particularly special with his father on the bag, stepping in as an emergency caddie. MacIntyre shared that having his dad as caddie didn’t necessarily help him relax or focus more, but it was comforting to have someone deeply invested in his success. The win ensured a significant paycheck for Dougie, allowing the MacIntyre family to pay off their mortgage.
After his win, MacIntyre shared the exciting news with his mother via FaceTime. She joyfully exclaimed, “Winner, winner, chicken dinner!” MacIntyre humorously noted that his dad might be on a celebratory bender. Overwhelmed with emotion, his mother struggled to find words. MacIntyre playfully remarked that it was the first time she had been quiet. He then told her the good news about paying off the mortgage, ending the call with mutual expressions of love.
