Scottie Scheffler made a strong return to the PGA Tour by claiming a share of the lead at the Memorial Tournament. In his first event since having all charges dropped in Kentucky, Scheffler birdied the final hole to finish five-under par for the day. He was joined at the top of the leaderboard by Adam Hadwin, both one stroke ahead of several players, including PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele.
This marked Scheffler’s first tournament since a legal incident at the PGA Championship last month. Scheffler was detained before his second round after attempting to drive into the course amidst heavy traffic caused by an unrelated fatal accident involving a pedestrian. He was charged with four offenses, including second-degree assault of a police officer, a felony. However, the charges were dropped 12 days later, which Scheffler learned during the preceding week’s Charles Schwab Challenge, where he finished tied for second.
At the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield, Scheffler started with two birdies in his first three holes. A bogey at the par-five fifth was his only dropped shot of the day. He then birdied the 11th, 13th, 15th, and 18th holes to secure his position at the top of the leaderboard.
