As The Memorial golf tournament approaches this weekend, Jack Nicklaus reflects on some of his memorable experiences, particularly one involving Tiger Woods. Nicklaus, discussing his own marriage and its positive impact on his game, speculated that marriage would similarly benefit Woods.
Recalling an anecdote about Woods, Nicklaus said, “I don’t mean this in a nasty way, but I remember when Tiger was single and then he got married. People asked, ‘How do you think that will affect Tiger’s career?’ I said, ‘Well, I think it will only be a plus.’ I thought he’d get tired of coming home and telling Butch Harmon, ‘Hey, Butch, I won another one.’ He had somebody to share it with. You want to share your career and enjoy the fruits of your work.”
However, as most know, Woods’ marriage ended in divorce due to his numerous affairs, which significantly affected his game. In recent years, Woods’ personal life has often overshadowed his professional achievements. Now, as his career appears to be winding down, it is evident that he is no longer the player he once was. Woods will miss The Memorial this weekend as he prepares for the US Open.
