Jon Rahm has added another $18 million to his substantial LIV Golf earnings by securing victory in the season’s Individual Championship.
The Spanish golfer triumphed by three strokes over Joaquin Niemann in Chicago, delivering a flawless round of 66 at Bolingbrook Golf Club.
Rahm, in his debut season with the Saudi-backed LIV Golf league, made headlines when he left the PGA Tour at the end of 2023. His departure shocked the golfing world and reportedly made him the second-highest-paid athlete globally, just behind Cristiano Ronaldo of Al Nassr.
According to Forbes, Rahm’s annual earnings are estimated at $218 million, trailing only Ronaldo’s $260 million. However, Rahm’s earnings can be further increased with prize money, such as the $18 million from this latest win.
There’s potential for even more prize money for the 29-year-old Basque golfer. Rahm’s team, Legion XIII, is currently in second place in the team championship. If they manage to claim the top spot in the final event next week, Rahm could add another $5 million to his earnings.
Reflecting on his victory, Rahm said: “I wouldn’t say it exceeded my expectations, but it definitely met them. Culminating a season of good golf, especially with an individual win, makes it all the more special. Knowing I had to win and getting it done is something to be proud of.”
Throughout the season, Rahm consistently performed well, finishing in the top ten in all 12 regular-season tournaments. However, his success didn’t extend to elite competitions outside of LIV Golf.
As a two-time major champion, having won the Masters in 2023 and the U.S. Open in 2021, Rahm struggled at this year’s majors. He failed to make the cut at the PGA Championship, finished tied for 45th at the Masters, and achieved his best result by tying for seventh at The Open.
Additionally, Rahm represented Spain at the Paris Olympics, narrowly missing out on a medal with a fifth-place finish.
This season has been dominated by American golfers Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele, with Rahm currently ranked 15th in the world rankings.
