Amanda Balionis throws shade at Rory McIlroy in interview with Bryson DeChambeau

Amanda Balionis Subtly References Rory McIlroy’s Media Absence in Post-Round Interview with Bryson DeChambeau

Amanda Balionis sparked online buzz after her interview with Bryson DeChambeau following his final round at the 2025 PGA Championship, with viewers speculating that the CBS reporter made a subtle dig at Rory McIlroy’s conspicuous absence from media duties throughout the tournament.

As she wrapped up her chat with DeChambeau, Balionis said, “Thank you for taking the time – I know you don’t have to take the time, but we appreciate it.” The remark, though seemingly polite, drew attention as a possible reference to McIlroy, who notably skipped all media sessions for four straight days—something highly uncharacteristic for him at a major championship.

McIlroy came into the PGA Championship following his recent career Grand Slam triumph, but his campaign began on a shaky note after a last-minute driver change. He struggled to gain momentum, posting rounds of 74, 69, 72, and 72, finishing three-over-par—well below expectations.

His silence throughout the week was widely criticized by journalists and fans alike, many of whom were left frustrated by the lack of insight or accountability. Balionis’ brief comment didn’t go unnoticed among viewers, who quickly took to social media with their interpretations.

One fan posted on X, “Amanda Balionis with the subtle jab at Rory McIlroy.” Another added, “Was that a dig at @McIlroyRory when Amanda thanked @brysondech for doing the interview?” A third chimed in: “@Amanda_Balionis Thank you for reminding Bryson that he didn’t have to do this, but he chose to. Some others (@McIlroyRory) could take notes.”

Criticism continued to mount, with another fan writing, “Amanda Balionis throwing shade at Rory while talking to Bryson.” Yet another asked: “Did Amanda just take a shot at Rory for ducking the media all week?”

Meanwhile, DeChambeau—who’s known for being media-friendly—spoke openly with Balionis, reflecting on a disappointing performance. Despite driving well and giving himself chances, the former U.S. Open champion said things simply didn’t fall into place.

“I’m baffled right now,” he admitted. “I felt like I drove it as well as I possibly could. A couple of breaks went the wrong way. I pressed at times, and the Green Mile got me again. That’s golf. I need to be more precise and consistent, like what Scottie’s doing right now.”

Looking ahead to the U.S. Open, DeChambeau voiced his motivation to improve: “I’m going to work my butt off to make it happen. It’s all about building and refining. I’m excited for the opportunity to improve and find something that clicks.”

The 2025 PGA Championship was convincingly won by Scottie Scheffler, who captured the Wanamaker Trophy with a dominant, steady performance. Finishing at 11-under-par, Scheffler held off challengers like Jon Rahm and cemented his status at the top of the sport.
