Aryna Sabalenka is on course to defend her Australian Open title, securing a spot in the final by avenging her loss to Coco Gauff in last year’s US Open final. The Belarusian second seed triumphed in a tense semi-final against American fourth seed Gauff with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 victory.
The opening set was marked by edginess and errors from both players, resulting in six breaks. Sabalenka seized control late in the second set, ultimately clinching the win. She is now set to face either Zheng Qinwen or Dayana Yastremska in Saturday’s final.
Anticipation for the clash between Sabalenka and Gauff was high, given their impressive performances leading up to the rematch. Sabalenka showcased her dominance, not dropping a set throughout the tournament and unleashing her powerful game with 33 winners.
Despite her aggressive style leading to occasional errors, Sabalenka’s comfort at Melbourne Park, where she won her first major title, was evident. She maintained composure to serve out the victory, becoming the first woman to reach consecutive finals since Serena Williams in 2017.
Reflecting on the match, Sabalenka expressed her focus on herself and readiness for Gauff’s challenging play. Gauff, who previously defeated Sabalenka in the US Open, was unable to replicate her success this time, ending her unbeaten start to the 2024 season.
Gauff, arriving in Melbourne after winning a WTA title in Auckland, faced nerves in the semi-final. Despite twice recovering from a break down in the first set, she succumbed to Sabalenka’s pressure. Sabalenka secured her revenge for the US Open defeat and earned a place in the final.
Gauff acknowledged the difficulty of the match, stating it was tough for her, but she highlighted the overall positive tournament experience. Despite having chances in both sets, she acknowledged Sabalenka’s superior play and emphasized the pivotal role of a few key points in tennis.
