Aryna Sabalenka etched her name in the history books by winning her maiden US Open title on Saturday, after beating Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5 in straight sets. The former world number 1 claimed her first title at Flushing Meadows and the third Grand Slam of her career.
That’s not all, Sabalenka was also rewarded with a historic prize money of $3.6 million, a massive upgrade of 20% from last year.
The 26-year-old had earlier won the Australian Open in the past two seasons, finally going one better than the second-place finish she mustered up last year at Arthur Ashe Stadium after Coco Gauff pipped her to the title in 2023.
According to CBS, Sabalenka took home a bumper paycheck of $3.6 million, which is almost 20% more than what Gauff was given last year. Furthermore, all four semifinalists in the men’s and women’s singles draw also pocketed $1 million each.
For the unversed, the 2024 US Open marks the 50th anniversary of the equal prize money awarded in the tournament to both male and female athletes.
Pegula pocketed $1.8 million after finishing as the runners-up in her maiden major final, interestingly, she has been in a rich vein of form, winning 15 of the 17 matches played over the past month but both the losses have come against Sabalenka.
The total prize pool for this year’s edition of the US Open was a staggering $75 million. Apart from the two finalists, semifinalists Emma Navarro and Karolina Muchova took home $1 million each.
“I’m speechless right now, because so many times I was so close to getting the US Open title. It’s a dream of mine, and finally I’ve got this beautiful trophy. It’s been a really difficult couple of weeks. Jessica played some amazing tennis and I’m more than sure that one day you’re going to get one Grand Slam, maybe more,” said Aryna Sabalenka after her maiden US Open triumph.
While the quarterfinalists each received $530,000, the prize money for the round of 16 was $325,000. Those who surpassed the round of 32 barrier pocketed $215,000, while qualifying past the round of 64 earned the athletes $140,000.
