The Cleveland Browns have broadened their search for a new offensive coordinator, with Brian Johnson, recently dismissed by the Philadelphia Eagles, meeting with coach Kevin Stefanski. The team has also obtained permission from the Los Angeles Chargers to interview coordinator Kellen Moore for the position. Stefanski has been seeking a replacement since parting ways with Alex Van Pelt after the Browns’ playoff exit.
Johnson, let go by the Eagles, interviewed at the Browns’ headquarters, while Moore, who is also meeting with the Eagles, is yet to be scheduled for an interview. Stefanski, a finalist for AP Coach of the Year, has considered candidates like Seattle’s Andy Dickerson, former Buffalo coordinator Ken Dorsey, and Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson.
If Moore is chosen, there’s speculation Stefanski might relinquish play-calling duties, something he has handled since 2020. Browns GM Andrew Berry noted Stefanski’s openness to reassessing his role in constructing the coaching staff.
Johnson’s quarterback expertise makes him attractive to the Browns, aiming to maximize Deshaun Watson’s performance. Johnson coached the Eagles’ quarterbacks in 2021, guiding Jalen Hurts to MVP contention, though the latter experienced regression this season.
Moore, with a successful play-calling stint for the Dallas Cowboys, and his recent role with the Chargers, emerges as the most experienced candidate. Stefanski has already filled other staff vacancies, hiring Duce Staley as running backs coach and Tommy Rees as tight ends coach.
The Browns are optimistic about retaining offensive line coach Bill Callahan, who could potentially join his son Brian’s staff in Tennessee. The team is navigating the offseason with an eye on bolstering their coaching lineup for the upcoming season.
