Bryson DeChambeau Backs Tiger Woods in Golf’s Greatest Debate Over Jack Nicklaus
Bryson DeChambeau has entered the long-standing debate in golf regarding who is the greatest player—Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus. Ahead of LIV Golf’s season finale, the 2024 U.S. Open champion shared his opinion, favoring Woods as the greatest of all time.
In a video posted by LIV Golf on social media, DeChambeau declared, “It’s got to be Tiger.” He continued, “Tiger is an idol of mine. He’s still my hero. The way he carried himself on the golf course, along with players like Payne Stewart and others who have inspired generations, has made Tiger’s impact unique and extraordinary.”
DeChambeau, clearly passionate about the topic, noted that he’s determined to show fans a new side of himself, after having held back for a long time. His admiration for Woods, however, has not yet been reciprocated in the form of a direct response from the golfing legend.
Woods himself has remained neutral on the matter, never publicly stating whether he considers himself better than Nicklaus. In a light-hearted comment, Woods once said, “I think he and I would’ve had a hell of a duel,” adding, with a chuckle, “Right now, I think I could kick his ass,” referencing their 36-year age difference.
**Woods and DeChambeau: Mending the Relationship**
The relationship between Woods and DeChambeau had been strained since DeChambeau joined LIV Golf and became one of 11 golfers who filed a lawsuit against the PGA Tour. At the time, Woods reportedly stopped communicating with DeChambeau, even ignoring his birthday message.
However, that tension appears to have eased. Speaking at the 152nd Open at Royal Troon, DeChambeau revealed that Woods had broken his silence earlier in the summer by congratulating him on his victory at the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. “It was the first communication we’d had,” DeChambeau said. “I’m sure winning two U.S. Opens helped with that. I really appreciated it.”
**Cordial Exchanges at The Open**
Woods and DeChambeau weren’t the only players who reconnected at the final men’s major of the year. Phil Mickelson also revealed that he exchanged pleasantries with Woods on the practice range, although he admitted there wasn’t time for a longer conversation.
“It’s not like we’re going to sit there and chat,” Mickelson said. “But we said hello, yeah.”
While Woods, DeChambeau, and Mickelson are on speaking terms, the nature of their relationships remains professional and civil, without much personal interaction.
