Bryson DeChambeau secured his second U.S. Open title on Sunday at Pinehurst No. 2, overtaking Rory McIlroy with a stunning bunker shot on the final hole. His caddie, Greg Bodine, later commented that he had witnessed DeChambeau execute even tougher shots in the past, underscoring the golfer’s resilience under pressure.
As McIlroy faltered, dropping his third shot in four holes, DeChambeau found a critical opportunity. Needing a par on the 72nd and final hole to capture his second major title, DeChambeau faced challenges with his driver throughout the round. After a wayward tee shot into the rough, he managed to punch the ball out but landed it in a bunker. From 55 yards out, DeChambeau made a superb shot, placing the ball just four feet from the hole, and confidently sank the putt to seal the victory. This win adds to his previous U.S. Open triumph at Winged Foot four years ago, leading to an ecstatic celebration.
Reflecting on the climactic final hours, DeChambeau highlighted the crucial support from his caddie. “Greg telling me, ‘You got this shot. I’ve seen way harder shots pulled off from you,’ on the 18th hole will always stand out for me,” he said. DeChambeau also discussed how instrumental Bodine has been in his journey, both professionally and personally.
“Oh, man. Yeah, I was struggling,” DeChambeau admitted. “I didn’t know where my game was. I had no idea what was going on. Greg was in a similar situation, starting a business called Evergreen and dealing with personal family issues. It was a weird time for both of us. Fate seemed to bring us together to help each other improve. He took a chance on me when I was unsure of my game, and he’s been a special presence in my life ever since. Greg’s calm and diligent approach has helped me realize that life isn’t just about golf, but about working hard and bringing out the best in each other.”
This partnership has not only improved DeChambeau’s performance on the course but has also led to significant personal growth, highlighting the deep bond between the golfer and his caddie.
