In 2024, no golfer experienced a more chaotic weekend than Scottie Scheffler, who was arrested just before the PGA Championship began and released in time to make his tee time. Despite the turmoil, he still turned in a strong performance, finishing tied for eighth. Fast forward to this year’s PGA Championship, and Scheffler responded with authority. He returned in dominant fashion, capturing his first PGA Championship title and the second major win of his young career.
Scheffler entered the final round with a three-shot lead. Though Spanish star Jon Rahm briefly caught up to him midway through the round, Scheffler quickly shifted into another gear. As Rahm stumbled and fell down the leaderboard, Scheffler surged ahead, walking onto the 18th hole with a commanding five-stroke lead. He closed out the tournament at 11-under par, while Davis Riley, Harris English, and Bryson DeChambeau finished tied for second at six-under.
Following his win, Scheffler made his way toward the clubhouse, carrying his son Bennett. Along the way, he was congratulated by Keegan Bradley—and then by DeChambeau, who shared a brief five-word message that quickly went viral, racking up over 100,000 views: “Great job, proud of you,” he told Scheffler as they exchanged a quick hug.
After his own round on Sunday, DeChambeau spoke to reporters, reflecting on how the weekend didn’t go his way, despite being in the lead after the cut. On Saturday, he had briefly reached eight-under to take the outright lead, but a rough finish—dropping three shots on two of his last three holes—left him in a tough position heading into the final round.
Even so, DeChambeau looked ahead with determination to the upcoming U.S. Open and praised Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked golfer, for his performance.
“It just felt like nothing went my way all week, and yeah, I’m pretty disappointed,” DeChambeau said. “But this is fueling a fire in my belly, and it’s going to push me to fight even harder at the U.S. Open this year.
“Man, I had this one again. It really sucks. But Scottie is playing incredible golf, and hats off to him if he finishes it off. He’s an amazing player, and I’ve got to work on getting to his level.”
