Carl Froch continues to express skepticism regarding the legitimacy of the cut that led to Tyson Fury postponing his highly anticipated fight with Oleksandr Usyk, once again referring to it as “convenient.”
Fury was on the brink of facing Usyk in a historic undisputed fight in February when he sustained the cut. Occurring late in his training camp from an elbow during sparring with a Croatian partner, the injury prompted an immediate postponement, with a new date set for May 18.
In the aftermath, speculation swirled regarding the authenticity of the cut and whether it served as a strategic move to extend Fury’s training camp, especially after his lackluster performance in his previous bout against Francis Ngannou in October.
Froch, who recently announced his intention to train Wayne Rooney for his boxing debut, remains among those unconvinced. Speaking to Grosvenor Casinos, he reiterated his doubts.
“I believe it’s more of a superficial cut than a deep muscle injury, which raises questions about its timing. I’ve been saying for months that this fight wouldn’t happen in February because I didn’t think Fury would be ready. When they announced it, I doubted Fury’s readiness. So when the fight was called off, it wasn’t surprising to me.”
“Do I think it’s a conspiracy? As much as I enjoy a good conspiracy theory, I believe Fury likely sustained an elbow to the face during sparring. However, it underscores his lack of preparation. He shouldn’t be getting injured like that. He should be employing defensive tactics, not getting hit.”
“I think Fury’s decline is evident, and this injury indicates he wasn’t fully prepared for Usyk.”
For Fury to validate his claims of being the best of his generation, he’ll need to be in peak form for the Usyk fight.
