Carlos Alcaraz, the reigning champion of the Indian Wells Masters, is eagerly preparing to defend his title as the tournament kicks off. The Spanish tennis sensation, who clinched his third career Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells in 2023, is back in Tennis Paradise, aiming for his 13th career title and his first of the season. Reflecting on his return, Alcaraz expressed his joy, stating, “It’s great to be back. I’m really happy to be able to play here again, a place that I love to play. I love being here. I get so much peace here, so it’s great.”
Despite his previous success at the tournament, Alcaraz acknowledges the formidable competition awaiting him this year. As the second seed, he faces the likes of Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, and Daniil Medvedev. However, Alcaraz remains steadfast in his goal to retain his title, affirming, “I’m coming here to defend the title… I’ve been feeling well in practice.”
Concerns have been raised about Alcaraz’s recent form, with notable exits at the Australian Open and the Argentina Open, as well as an ankle injury at the Rio Open. Addressing these issues, Alcaraz admitted, “Probably some people are thinking about my ankle. Let’s see if I’m going to stay 100 per cent or not.” Despite these setbacks, he emphasized feeling better and is determined to focus solely on defending his title.
In a recent exhibition match against Rafael Nadal, Alcaraz showed signs of improvement, boosting his confidence ahead of the Indian Wells tournament. With a bye in the opening round, he will commence his campaign against Matteo Arnaldi in the second round on Saturday. As the tennis world eagerly awaits the action to unfold, all eyes will be on Alcaraz as he strives to make his mark once again in Tennis Paradise.
