Carlos Alcaraz has expressed sympathy for Jannik Sinner following the reopening of the doping case against the world No. 1, calling the situation “not a good sign” for tennis. Although Sinner was initially cleared by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) in August after failing two drug tests earlier in the year, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has since appealed the decision. The ITIA had found Sinner to be free of fault after accepting that clostebol, the substance found in his system, was due to contamination from a support team member, physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi, with whom Sinner has since parted ways.
WADA, however, is challenging the ITIA ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), arguing that the finding of “no fault or negligence” was incorrect and pushing for a one to two-year ban.
Sinner, understandably shocked by the development, maintains his innocence, asserting that he has “nothing to hide” and will once again fight to clear his name.
Alcaraz admitted he thought the case had been resolved and acknowledged the negative impact the ongoing saga could have on the sport. “I think for tennis, it’s not a good sign. I was surprised to see that the case was reopened,” the Spaniard shared. “I’m not sure what will happen in the coming months, but it’s definitely not positive for tennis.”
Alcaraz also expressed admiration for Sinner’s ability to maintain his high level of play despite the off-court challenges. “I know it’s a difficult situation for him. Everyone is talking about it, and people may view him differently now,” he said. “But the way he continues to perform on the court, despite everything, is remarkable. I hope this issue is resolved soon so he can focus fully on what he loves—playing tennis.”
