Tiger Woods has turned to his son, Charlie Woods, for assistance as he prepares for this week’s US Open at Pinehurst in North Carolina. At 48, Woods is making his first competitive start since missing the cut at the US PGA Championship at Valhalla last month, where he posted rounds of 72 and 77.
After a four-week hiatus from the PGA Tour, Tiger has arrived at Pinehurst well in advance to fine-tune his game. Last week, he familiarized himself with the Pinehurst No. 2 course alongside his new caddie, Lance Bennett. On Sunday, he was seen on the practice range and course with Charlie, who has accompanied him to the last two major championships to assist with his swing.
Charlie, a skilled golfer with a +3 handicap, has been instrumental in helping Tiger with a specific drill aimed at improving his swing. The drill, reminiscent of one Tiger used with his former coach Butch Harmon, involves Charlie holding a golf club in front of Tiger as he swings. This technique helps Tiger keep his arms from extending too far to the right, promoting a tighter connection between his arms and body.
Charlie has established himself as a notable junior golfer, securing two victories on the main junior circuit, including a standout win at the 2023 Notah Begay III Junior Golf Championship in the 14-15 division. He has also performed admirably at the annual PNC Championship, playing alongside his father. Recently, Charlie achieved state championship honors with his school, Benjamin Boys, winning the Florida High School Athletic Association Class A State Championship. Both his parents, Elin Nordegren and Tiger Woods, attended the presentation of his state championship ring. Despite his achievements, Charlie’s attempt to qualify for the 2024 US Open fell short, as he finished T32 at the Will Lowery Junior Championship.
Tiger is scheduled to play a practice round on Monday with Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth, and Justin Thomas as he intensifies his preparations for the third major of the season. The 15-time major champion, who has won the US Open three times in 2000, 2002, and 2008, is aiming to make a strong return at Pinehurst.
