Charlie Woods, the son of legendary golfer Tiger Woods, took his first swing at qualifying for a PGA TOUR event at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches’ pre-qualifier. It marked the beginning of what promises to be a lifelong journey into the world of professional golf.
While Woods didn’t advance from the pre-qualifier, his presence drew significant attention. A large crowd followed the relaxed 15-year-old as he navigated the 18-hole qualifier at Lost Lake Golf Club. Despite the chilly morning, Woods remained warm and jovial, sharing laughs with his caddie, J.J. Kutner, and playing partner Olin Browne Jr., son of three-time TOUR winner Olin Browne.
Browne Jr. praised Woods, noting his remarkable golf skills and commendable conduct on the course. Despite not performing at his best, Woods showcased glimpses of his talent, earning admiration from spectators and fellow players alike.
Supported by his mother, Elin, and his team, Woods embraced the experience of competing in a TOUR pre-qualifier. He arrived early, donning his signature blue Greyson pullover and a white Sun Day Red glove, ready to tee off at 7:39 a.m. The sight of Woods on the course attracted local and national media attention, as well as enthusiastic fans from Hobe Sound and beyond.
The atmosphere was electric, with curious onlookers filling the small parking lot at Lost Lake and lining the fairways to catch a glimpse of the young prodigy. Even residents along the course joined in, setting up lawn chairs and enjoying the spectacle with cocktails in hand.
While the fan presence may not have rivaled the bustling galleries of premier tournaments, such as THE PLAYERS Championship, it provided Woods with valuable experience under pressure. Despite not advancing to the Monday Qualifier, Woods gained invaluable insights that will undoubtedly benefit him as he continues to develop his game.
Looking ahead, Woods will return to his high school golf team at the Benjamin School, where they aim to defend their state championship title. Armed with the lessons learned from his first taste of TOUR qualification, Woods is poised to face future challenges on his journey towards professional success.
