Charlie Woods, the son of golf legend Tiger Woods, had a commendable performance at the 2024 Future Masters held at Dothan Country Club in Alabama, finishing inside the top 40 in the 15-18 age category. The tournament, which is celebrating its 75th year and is one of the longest-running junior championships in the US, had to be shortened to 36 holes due to inclement weather, preventing the completion of a third round.
The Future Masters has a storied history, with past champions including Stewart Cink, Hudson Swafford, and Ollie Schniederjans. This year’s event saw 232 participants from across the country competing from Thursday to Saturday. The Dothan Country Club, located near the Georgia-Florida border, was the venue for this prestigious junior golf event.
Despite efforts to complete the tournament as planned, weather conditions forced the organizers to truncate the event after only two rounds. Some players had started their third round on Saturday, but their scores did not count as the round could not be completed by all participants.
The overall 15-18 age category title went to Jack Lowery from Homewood, Alabama, who finished with a gross score of three-under par, thanks to two rounds of 69. He narrowly beat Brantley Moore, who was just one shot behind. Charlie Woods, one of the younger golfers in the competition, shot rounds of 73 and 76, ending up eight-over par and securing a T40 finish.
Woods began his first round on Thursday paired with other junior golfers whose fathers are also former Major champions. He was three-over through the first eight holes but managed to gain some momentum with a birdie on the 18th hole. He continued with a second birdie on the first hole of the course’s front nine but dropped two more shots due to three bogeys and another birdie, concluding the round at 73.
On Friday, Woods struggled with a challenging start, including double bogeys on the 12th and 14th holes, and a bogey on the 17th, resulting in a halfway score of 40. He added two more bogeys through the front half of the course, but a birdie on the sixth hole helped mitigate the damage, leading to an overall score of 149.
Although Woods started his third round on Saturday, bad weather ultimately prevented its completion. A video shared by NUCLR Golf on X showed Woods hitting a powerful drive down the 10th hole, but his efforts to improve his standing were cut short.
Just days before the Future Masters, Woods had qualified for the US Junior Amateur by winning a pre-championship event at Eagle Trace Golf Club in Florida. In the Future Masters, other notable participants included Liam Curtis, son of 2003 Open champion Ben Curtis, who finished T21 at five-over par, and Henry Kuehne, son of 1998 US Amateur champion Hank Kuehne, who finished T78. Jacob Immelman, son of 2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman, did not make the cut.
The 2024 Future Masters, despite weather challenges, showcased the talents of promising young golfers, including Charlie Woods, who continues to build his legacy in the world of junior golf.
