Colin Montgomerie recently questioned Tiger Woods’ decision to compete in the Open Championship at Royal Troon, citing Woods’ ongoing fitness struggles and suggesting that it might be time for Woods to retire. Montgomerie expressed a desire for people to remember Woods at his peak, rather than struggling through tournaments.
Woods responded by pointing out that, as a past Open champion, he is exempt to compete until he is 60—an honor Montgomerie does not have. Woods emphasized that he still has the right to make the decision to compete, unlike Montgomerie.
Following Woods’ response, Montgomerie clarified on social media that his comments were taken out of context and reiterated his well-wishes for Woods. Montgomerie had previously suggested that Woods should have retired after his emotional farewell at the 2022 Open at St. Andrews. Despite the retirement calls, Woods is set to start his first round at Royal Troon alongside Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay.
