Collin Morikawa prepared for the 49th edition of the Memorial Tournament by spending a few days with Tiger Woods, who has won Jack Nicklaus’ tournament a record five times. Morikawa was left in awe after the experience.
The two golfers appeared at a clinic during the 21st edition of Woods’ charity event, Tiger Jam, in Las Vegas. As expected, Woods displayed his trademark mix of trash talk and impressive golf skills.
While on the driving range at Shadow Creek, Woods and Morikawa entertained the crowd with their shot-making abilities. Morikawa recounted how Woods playfully mocked his inability to hit a draw. In response, Morikawa managed a 5-yard draw. Woods then hit a more challenging hook, demonstrating his still-intact skill and precision by aiming dangerously close to the crowd.
Morikawa, who has six PGA Tour wins, including the 2020 Workday Charity Open at Muirfield Village Golf Club, expressed his amazement at sharing the stage with Woods. Reflecting on the experience, he noted the significance of spending time with his childhood idol, hitting golf balls, playing poker, and gaining insights from Woods.
Woods, who made the cut at the Masters for a record 25th year in a row, struggled at the PGA Championship, missing the cut at Valhalla Golf Club. He is scheduled to compete in the 124th U.S. Open at Pinehurst next week, playing on a special exemption.
When asked if Woods should use a cart at regular events, given his exceptional ball-striking ability, Morikawa acknowledged Woods’ strong ego. He suggested that Woods prefers to continue playing without a cart for as long as possible, despite the convenience it might offer. Morikawa himself admitted he would use a cart if allowed, but he respects Woods’ choice to compete without one.
