Rory McIlroy reportedly used a private investigator to serve divorce papers to Erica Stoll just 24 hours after winning the Wells Fargo Championship. This revelation, detailed in a recent Belfast Telegraph report, has added a dramatic twist to the couple’s separation.
According to the report, McIlroy digitally signed the divorce papers between 9:06 PM and 9:08 PM EDT on May 9. He filed for divorce on May 13, ending his seven-year marriage to Stoll. The court proceedings were lodged in Palm Beach County Court by Thomas Sasser, the same lawyer who represented Tiger Woods during his high-profile divorce from Elin Nordegren.
Carl Woods, a seasoned private investigator and certified homicide investigator, served the divorce summons to Stoll. The documents reveal that Woods received the papers at 9:58 AM on May 13 and delivered them to Stoll at the McIlroy family home in The Bear’s Club, an exclusive Jack Nicklaus development, at 10:30 AM.
Woods’ filing describes Stoll as a white woman with blonde hair, in her 30s, thin, and approximately 5ft 7in to 5ft 8in in height. The summons warned Stoll that she had 20 days to file a written response to McIlroy’s petition with the circuit court clerk. The document stressed the importance of a written response, noting that failure to respond could result in the loss of wages, money, and property without further court warning. It also advised Stoll to contact an attorney immediately.
McIlroy has not publicly commented on his divorce and has maintained his silence despite media inquiries. During the PGA Championship, he gave a curt response when asked about his private life.
In another development, unsubstantiated reports from the Daily Mail suggest that McIlroy might be romantically involved with CBS golf reporter Amanda Balionis.
Despite the personal turmoil, McIlroy is set to play in the upcoming PGA Tour event and is the favorite to win the RBC Canadian Open. McIlroy previously won the Canadian Open in 2019 and 2022, with the latter victory notably including a pointed remark directed at LIV Golf commissioner Greg Norman.
As McIlroy takes a break from professional golf during the busy major season, this revelation adds another layer of intrigue to the ongoing narrative of his personal and professional life.
