Dan Evans kicked off Great Britain’s Davis Cup campaign with a solid win in their opening match against Finland, securing a strong start in the quest to reach the knockout stage. Evans, 34, overcame 703rd-ranked Eero Vasa with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 victory in Manchester on Wednesday, putting Britain 1-0 up in the best-of-three Group D tie.
Jack Draper, the British men’s number one and recent US Open semi-finalist, was rested for this match after his deep run in New York. Instead, Billy Harris was given his Davis Cup debut, knowing that a win in the second match could clinch the tie for Britain.
Draper, 22, arrived in Manchester on Tuesday and, after assessing his condition, British captain Leon Smith decided to give him more time to recover. Draper may return to the court for upcoming ties against Argentina and Canada later in the week.
Britain is aiming to top Group D in this four-nation round-robin format, with hopes of advancing to the Davis Cup Finals’ last eight in Malaga later this year. As the post-Andy Murray era begins, Evans remains a key figure in the team.
Although Evans has recently slipped out of the world’s top 150, he showcased his value to the squad in front of a nearly full Manchester Arena. Facing the lesser-known Vasa, who usually competes on the lower-tier Futures Tour, many expected Evans to win easily. However, the 27-year-old Finn exceeded expectations with powerful serves and strong baseline rallies, making Evans work hard for his victory.
Evans had to save two break points in the opening game before gradually taking control. Although he missed three set points on Vasa’s serve, he capitalized in the tie-break, forcing errors from his opponent.
In the second set, Evans found his rhythm, securing a double break and ultimately serving out the match. Reflecting on the match, Evans said, “It was a difficult match; he played great at the start. I knew he would come out and play aggressively. It took me a while to find my rhythm, but I improved as the match went on.”
This win sets a positive tone for Britain as they aim to secure a spot in the Davis Cup Finals.
