Davis Thompson hits PGA Tour first after Jordan Spieth’s John Deere Classic comment

Posted on July 8, 2024

Davis Thompson emerged victorious at the John Deere Classic with a remarkable 28-under 256 total, setting a new tournament record. The 25-year-old secured his first PGA Tour win with an impressive four-shot lead, closing with a stunning 63 in the final round at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. This victory has earned him a coveted spot in the upcoming British Open at Royal Troon.

Thompson’s win underscores recent comments by Jordan Spieth, who described the John Deere Classic course as “bottom-half easier” for professional golfers. The course’s forgiving nature was evident as Thompson shot a career-low 62 in the third round, building a two-shot lead heading into the final day.

Thompson’s final round began with a flurry of birdies, five in the first six holes, leading to a front-nine score of 29. This commanding start gave him a six-shot cushion that he maintained despite a more modest one-under on the back nine. Reflecting on his performance, Thompson said, “I’m just thankful it worked out. I got off to a great start today and was able to just kind of cruise on the back nine.”

With his victory, Thompson joins a prestigious group as the 24th golfer to secure his first PGA Tour win at the John Deere Classic, a feat unmatched by any other tournament since 1970. Spieth, a three-time major winner, also achieved his first tour victory at this event in 2013 and has praised the course for its playability.

Thompson’s triumph follows a strong showing at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, where he finished second. His win at the John Deere Classic not only marks a significant milestone in his career but also guarantees his debut at the British Open, his fifth major championship appearance. “Getting off to a good start was crucial, and I was just able to ride the momentum coming in,” Thompson remarked.

The John Deere Classic also saw C.T. Pan secure a spot at the British Open, edging out Michael Thorbjornsen and Luke Clanton based on his superior Official World Golf Ranking.

Jordan Spieth, who carded a 67 on Friday, noted the ease of the course under favorable conditions, saying, “It’s one of the probably bottom-half easier golf courses. It’s a great golf course. When it’s soft it’s one of the easiest ones we play. You still have to hit nice shots.”

As Thompson looks ahead to Royal Troon, he carries the confidence of a new champion, ready to take on the challenges of his first British Open.
