Bryson DeChambeau admitted his disappointment in not securing his second Major title, despite equaling the previous record score-to-par at Valhalla. The LIV golfer shot an impressive final round of 64 (-7) at the PGA Championship, including a birdie on the final hole, but finished one stroke behind Xander Schauffele’s new record 21-under-par total.
This performance follows DeChambeau’s strong showing at The Masters last month, where he finished T6. Reflecting on his near-miss, the 2020 US Open champion praised Schauffele, calling him “well deserving” of a Major title, and expressed pride in his own play.
“Definitely disappointing, but it gives me a lot of momentum for the rest of the Majors. I said today it was closing time, and it will be closing time hopefully over the next couple Majors,” DeChambeau remarked.
Starting the day two strokes behind the leader, DeChambeau’s seven-under score brought him to 20-under, pressuring Schauffele to maintain a low score. Schauffele rose to the challenge, leaving DeChambeau to admit he initially thought 18-under would secure the win.
“I certainly thought 18-under was going to do it,” he said. “Then I saw what Xander was doing. He’s playing some unbelievable golf. Viktor [Hovland] was right there, beating me for a while as I was hitting it all over the place. It was an impressive round by all three of us.”
DeChambeau emphasized his effort and resilience
