In a thrilling showcase of talent and perseverance, Mackenzie Hughes and Frank Edwards emerged triumphant in the gross division of the esteemed Seminole Pro-Member tournament, while Erik van Rooyen and John Pinkham claimed the net division title on a memorable Monday.
Van Rooyen’s journey at Seminole Golf Club began with him holding the clubhouse lead at the Cognizant Classic. Despite the completion of the tournament on Monday due to a weather suspension, Van Rooyen’s determination never wavered. As he was on the verge of departing the event to return to PGA National, fate intervened. Van Rooyen chose to stay and compete, ultimately securing a net score of 62 to clinch victory in a tense scorecard playoff. Although he fell short in the Cognizant Classic, which was won by Austin Eckroat with a stellar performance finishing at 17 under, Van Rooyen’s resilience and skill shone through.
Meanwhile, Hughes and Edwards showcased their prowess on the course, combining for a commendable 64 to secure a narrow one-stroke victory over a field of formidable competitors, which included FedExCup leader Matthieu Pavon and Andrew Whiteley. The intensity of the competition was palpable as Ryan Fox and Jimmy Dunne III also fought valiantly, finishing tied for second place in the gross division.
Adding to the excitement of the event was the participation of golf legend Tiger Woods, who teamed up with PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh for their debut appearance. Despite their status as newcomers to the tournament, Woods and Waugh displayed admirable skill and sportsmanship, finishing tied for 44th in the gross division and tied for 33rd in the net division.
