Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson is facing increasing criticism, with former teammate Jordan Wilkins adding fuel to the fire. On Thursday, September 12, Wilkins, a former Browns running back, took to Instagram to call out Watson for comments made about his teammates, amid the quarterback’s on-field struggles and a fresh allegation of sexual assault and battery. Watson had remarked that his teammates trust him due to his “aura” during a Wednesday press conference. He said, “The trust has always been there. You can ask any of those guys, and they’ll give you an honest answer. They see me every day, they know my aura, my energy, my character. I think they understand who I really am.”
Wilkins, however, wasn’t buying it. In an Instagram story highlighted by Brad Stainbrook of The Orange and Brown Report, Wilkins responded, “Yehh, sure bro. Watch the next slide and y’all tell me.” The following clip showed Watson botching a handoff to Wilkins during the final preseason game, which Wilkins captioned, “[Watson] went to the sideline and told the coaches I didn’t know the play. Then it happened again the next drive.” Wilkins was ultimately released before the final roster cut and is now a free agent.
Since joining Cleveland in March 2022, Watson has gone 8-5 in the 13 games he’s played, missing 11 games in 2022 due to violating the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy tied to multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. Last season, he missed an additional 11 games due to a shoulder injury. The Browns are off to a rough start this season, currently 0-1 after a blowout loss to the Dallas Cowboys, where Watson threw for 169 yards, 1 TD, and 2 INTs.
