Nearly a year has passed since the announcement of a framework agreement between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), the operators of LIV Golf, yet the golf world still awaits a final pact. However, Jon Rahm isn’t idly waiting for developments; instead, he’s been vocal about his hopes for the future of pro golf.
Since joining LIV in January, Rahm has been forthright in sharing his opinions on how the LIV circuit could evolve, expressing a desire for some form of merger between the PGA Tour and LIV. In an interview with GOLF’s Dylan Dethier earlier this year, Rahm revealed that the potential merger influenced his decision to leave the PGA Tour, stating, “What opened the door a little bit was that PGA Tour and LIV agreement.”
Rahm’s proactive stance was evident during a joint press conference with LIV CEO Greg Norman ahead of the LIV Adelaide event in Australia. When questioned about his vision for the future, Rahm initially admitted uncertainty, echoing sentiments from both sides about the multitude of unknowns surrounding the agreement.
However, Rahm remains optimistic that an agreement will lead to a superior product for golf fans worldwide. He emphasized the potential to elevate golf to new heights in global markets if managed effectively, expressing a desire to see the sport become a bigger product on a worldwide scale.
When pressed further, Rahm disclosed his eagerness to participate in certain PGA Tour events if they didn’t conflict with his LIV schedule. He singled out events such as the American Express, Farmers Insurance Open, WM Phoenix Open, Genesis Invitational, and the Players Championship as tournaments he’d love to play.
Addressing concerns about an increased workload, Rahm reassured that he’s accustomed to playing a busy schedule, citing his past experience of playing 23 to 24 events per year between the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. He also expressed a commitment to participating in events in Spain, such as the Spanish Open, reflecting his dedication to his home country.
Currently ranked second in the individual LIV standings for 2024 and serving as the captain of the LIV team Legion XIII, Rahm’s candid remarks provide insight into his perspective on the future of professional golf amidst ongoing negotiations and speculation. Despite a modest finish at the 2024 Masters, Rahm’s influence and aspirations for the sport remain undeniable.
