Justin Thomas is gearing up for a life-changing event as he and his wife, Jillian, are expecting their first child at the end of November. With fatherhood on the horizon, the golf star has been open about the emotional journey ahead and how it will impact both his personal and professional life.
In an Instagram post following the Tour Championship, Thomas shared the news of their upcoming addition, which marks a new chapter for the couple. This announcement came during a period of reflection for Thomas, as he was not selected for this year’s U.S. Presidents Cup team by captain Jim Furyk. The extra time away from competition has allowed Thomas to focus on preparing for fatherhood, a role he admits comes with a mix of excitement and uncertainty.
Speaking ahead of the ZOZO Championship in Japan, his last tournament before his baby arrives, Thomas shared a candid thought that many expectant fathers can relate to: “I don’t think you ever are [prepared to be a father],” he admitted with a laugh. “All I know is I’ll be as ready as I possibly can, and we’re going to make the most of every situation we can. I can’t tell you honestly if I’m ready because I’ve never done it before. I’ll let you know in a couple of months.”
Thomas is aware that the challenges of fatherhood will be unlike anything he has faced on the golf course. “Any golf shot or situation I am in this week, it’s not going to be anything close to as hard as it’s going to be in a month or so when our little one comes,” he said. Despite the challenges, he expressed excitement about the new responsibilities ahead, confident in his wife’s ability to be a great mother.
Thomas joins a growing list of PGA Tour pros embracing fatherhood this year. Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns both welcomed babies earlier this spring. Scheffler’s son, Bennett, was born on May 8, just days before the golfer faced a tough situation at the PGA Championship when he was briefly detained by police. Meanwhile, Burns became a father to son Bear on April 22, the same day Scheffler secured victory at the RBC Heritage.
Unlike his peers, Thomas won’t be dealing with fatherhood during the high-pressure stretch of major championships. However, he shares the same commitment to putting family first, emphasizing that while his career on the PGA Tour is important, nothing compares to the significance of becoming a father.
Reflecting on what lies ahead, Thomas acknowledged that the reality of fatherhood is beginning to sink in. “I think reality will probably set in when I’m flying home and then when I get home because it will be getting in crunch time,” he shared. “I know my wife’s going to be an unbelievable mom, and I’m excited about the opportunity to raise a little girl. It’s going to be great.”
For now, Thomas is focused on finishing his season strong at the ZOZO Championship, but once that’s done, his attention will shift to preparing for the arrival of his daughter. “This week, I’m focused on business and trying to win a golf tournament. Then, it’s time to go home and get ready to be a dad,” he concluded.
With a mix of anticipation and readiness, Thomas is looking forward to the joys and challenges that fatherhood will bring, eager to start this next chapter with his family.
