Sean Mannion has officially announced his retirement from the NFL after a nine-season journey as a quarterback. However, Mannion isn’t straying far from the football field, as he swiftly transitions into coaching with the Green Bay Packers under head coach Matt LaFleur, according to ESPN. While his specific title has not been disclosed, the 31-year-old is set to contribute to coaching quarterbacks and the passing game.
The Packers’ coaching lineup, led by LaFleur, presently includes Adam Stenavich as the offensive coordinator, Tom Clements as the quarterbacks coach, and Jason Vrable as the wide receivers and passing game coordinator.
Mannion’s coaching role will involve working closely with Jordan Love, who enters his second season as the Packers’ starting quarterback. Love, a former first-round pick, showcased his skills by guiding Green Bay to the divisional round after stepping in for Aaron Rodgers and orchestrating an upset against the Dallas Cowboys.
Sean Mannion embarked on his NFL career as a third-round draft pick for the St. Louis Rams in 2015, hailing from Oregon State. His journey continued with the Rams through their relocation to Los Angeles before joining the Vikings in 2019. The latter part of Mannion’s career featured a back-and-forth between Minnesota and Seattle, with three stints at each organization. His final season in 2023 started with the Vikings, where he signed onto their practice squad in October, only to be released in late November, leading to a subsequent stint with Seattle’s practice unit.
Throughout his playing career, Mannion faced the challenges of a 0-3 record as a starting quarterback, completing 60.9% of his passes for a total of 573 yards, contributing one touchdown and three interceptions. As he transitions to coaching, Mannion brings his valuable experience to the Packers’ staff, aiming to make an impact on the development of the team’s quarterbacks and passing game.
