The much-anticipated heavyweight championship clash between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk has encountered a setback, prompting a rescheduling to May 18 in Riyadh, according to a Saudi Arabian government spokesperson on “The MMA Hour.”
Originally slated for Feb. 17, the bout was postponed after Fury sustained a significant cut over his right eye during sparring. Despite initial tensions, including Usyk’s manager, Egis Klimas, labeling Fury a “coward,” the fighters have now united for the rescheduled event after giving Fury adequate time for recovery.
A social media statement, accompanied by a photo of Fury’s injury, announced the postponement. Fury, who required 15 stitches, expressed deep disappointment, apologizing to all affected parties, including Team Usyk, undercard fighters, partners, fans, and Saudi Arabian hosts.
The road to this clash has been fraught with delays, as the original date of Dec. 23 was pushed back due to Fury’s close call against MMA star Francis Ngannou on Oct. 28. Fury narrowly secured victory in a split decision after surviving a knockdown.
While speculation arose that Fury may have underestimated Ngannou, his dedication to the fight with Usyk was evident through his superb conditioning before the unfortunate injury. As the fighters prepare for the rescheduled date, the boxing world eagerly awaits the outcome of this heavyweight spectacle.
