As the golf world shifts its focus from the recently concluded PGA Championship to the upcoming US Open at Pinehurst No. 2, final qualifying rounds are underway. On Monday, several high-profile golfers, including LIV Golf players Sergio Garcia and Abraham Ancer, are participating in a 36-hole qualifier at the Dallas Athletic Club in Texas, aiming to secure their spots in next month’s event.
Sergio Garcia is particularly eager to qualify, seeking to make his 25th consecutive US Open appearance. Last year, Garcia successfully navigated the final qualifying stage, shooting nine under over 36 holes to earn his spot and ultimately finished tied for 54th in the tournament. However, since LIV Golf events do not contribute world ranking points, Garcia has seen his ranking drop to 731st, making final qualifying his most viable route to the US Open.
Abraham Ancer, who is also a member of the Fireballs GC team like Garcia, is striving for his fifth US Open appearance. Currently ranked 273rd, Ancer finds himself in a similar position, relying on the final qualifier to secure his entry. The Dallas Athletic Club qualifier will see 11 golfers earn spots at the end of what promises to be a challenging day.
Other notable LIV golfers competing at Dallas include Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra, Danny Lee, Kevin Na, and Caleb Surrat. Additionally, well-known PGA Tour players such as four-time winner Aaron Baddeley, “Full Swing” star Joel Dahmen, and five-time tour winner Ryan Moore are also vying for a place in the US Open.
Earlier in the day, Japan hosted a qualifier where LIV golfer Scott Vincent attempted to secure one of three available spots but was unsuccessful. In England, Walton Heath, the venue for last year’s AIG Women’s Open, hosted another qualifier, with Robert Rock and Matteo Manassero among nine players who qualified.
The final batch of qualifiers will take place across 10 venues in the US and Canada on June 3, ahead of the US Open, which begins on June 13. For Ancer and others, the final qualifying rounds are crucial, given their current world rankings and the importance of securing a spot in one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments.
