Nine-time Major winner Gary Player has suggested that Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler should have a challenge match before the 2024 Open Championship. Both golfers will be part of the star-studded lineup at the final Major of the year.
Bryson DeChambeau recently won the US Open after a thrilling final day against Rory McIlroy. Scottie Scheffler, who won the Masters this year and five other PGA Tour events, is also in great form. Both players are favorites to win. In a recent Golf Monthly video, Gary Player praised DeChambeau’s performance and his excellent iron play. Player said a match between DeChambeau and Scheffler would be exciting.
“DeChambeau is a fascinating character. No golfer has ever perfected the long bunker shot. It was ironic that Rory missed a putt, giving DeChambeau an almost impossible shot, yet he managed to win. I’m a big fan of DeChambeau. A challenge match between him and Scheffler would be great.”
Scheffler has odds of +450 to win the Open Championship, while DeChambeau has odds of +1400 (via CBS Sports). Alongside Scheffler and DeChambeau, other top golfers like Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy will also compete. Schauffele, currently World No. 3, is aiming for another Major win after his PGA Championship victory earlier this year.
Rory McIlroy is looking for his first Major win in over a decade. He came close at the US Open but was ultimately beaten by DeChambeau. McIlroy is now focused on the Open Championship. He said, “I played here eight years ago and remember it well. It’s important to have a good strategy off the tees and around the greens. The bunkers at Troon are very challenging. My ball-striking is good, so I’m confident.”
The 2024 Open Championship will take place from July 18-21 at the Royal Troon Golf Club.
