Daniel Brown might be a relative unknown to many, but he’s proving to be a man of the people, as shown by his actions on the par-4 18th in the third round of the 152nd Open Championship.
Brown, 29, hit a perfect tee shot and then walked over to a group of fans who wanted a selfie with him before his second shot. Most Tour pros wouldn’t stop for a photo with fans during a competitive round, especially on the final hole with a one-shot lead at The Open. But Brown had other ideas.
Brown put out his cigarette in the deep rough on the 18th hole and posed for a quick set of selfies with fans along the right flank. Ripping darts and taking selfies on the 18th while leading The Open.

Unfortunately, this proved to be an unlucky move for the English qualifier and major debutant. When Brown got to his ball, he found it lying right next to a bunker, forcing him to stand in the bunker to play the shot with his ball close to waist height. He faced a similar issue on the 1st hole, although that was nearer to knee height.
Brown chipped the ball back into the 18th fairway but found the greenside bunker with his third shot. He splashed out to about 15 feet but failed to convert the putt. This marked Brown’s first double bogey of the week, sending him from one shot ahead to one shot behind Billy Horschel heading into the final round of The Open Championship.
Royal Troon was playing brutally on Saturday, particularly the back nine. Players including Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose, and Scottie Scheffler admitted that the inward nine in round three was the ‘hardest ever faced’ in their professional careers.
Brown is seeking to become the first player to win on their major debut since Keegan Bradley at the 2011 US PGA. He booked his spot in The Open after coming through a qualifier at West Lancs earlier this month, the same qualifier that LIV Golf’s Sergio Garcia failed to pass through.
At 3-under par for 54 holes, Brown finds himself in a tie for second alongside Sam Burns, Russell Henley, Thriston Lawrence, Justin Rose, and Xander Schauffele. World No.1 Scottie Scheffler is a further shot back at 2-under par. Overnight leader Shane Lowry had a tough day, particularly on the back nine, but the 2019 Open champion remains in the hunt in solo ninth at 1-under par. Lowry fumed at Saturday’s course setup.
Matt Jordan, Adam Scott, and Justin Thomas round out the top 10 at level par. Despite the double bogey on 18, Brown will be paired with two-time Masters champion Scheffler for the first time in his career. Brown and Scheffler will start their final rounds at 1.55pm local time.
