Luke Donald has expressed confidence in Jon Rahm’s ability to adapt to LIV Golf’s unique format, despite the Spaniard’s recent struggles at major tournaments since joining the controversial circuit. Rahm, who missed the cut at the US PGA Championship following a second round 72, has not been a serious contender in major tournaments since moving to LIV Golf in December.
Donald, the European Ryder Cup captain, has downplayed concerns about Rahm’s form. He noted that adjusting from traditional four-round events to LIV’s three-round structure requires time. “Jon’s record speaks for itself and what he’s done,” Donald said. “Golfers are very much creatures of habit. You’re used to four rounds and go to three, the mentality is a bit different, and you have to push a little bit more because you have one less round to do it.”
Despite Rahm’s lack of victories on the LIV tour, where he has nonetheless achieved several top-10 finishes, Donald remains unfazed. He emphasized that Rahm’s form closer to the Ryder Cup is what truly matters. “It’s all a bit new for him. His results on LIV certainly haven’t been terrible, a lot of top 10s. I know he hasn’t won, but I’m not too concerned right now. Form is more important to me leading up to a Ryder Cup, not 15, 16 months out.”
Rahm himself has acknowledged his struggles, particularly his missed cut at the US PGA, attributing his performance to mistakes and the challenging course conditions when he failed to hit fairways. However, his eligibility for the European Ryder Cup team next year remains secure, provided he maintains his DP World Tour card by playing the required four events annually.
Donald confirmed this, stating, “If they follow the rules of the DP World Tour they are still eligible and they can still play.” He also noted that the European team is focused on their own preparations, having scoped out next year’s Ryder Cup venue, Bethpage Black, following his own final round of 71 to finish at two-under par.
As for the US Ryder Cup team, their captain has yet to be named, with Tiger Woods reportedly being considered. Donald commented on this uncertainty, “We feel like we’re on track and not really concerned what the US are doing at the moment. I know Tiger’s very busy with everything going on on the PGA Policy Board. Maybe his focus right now is a little bit more on that. Whenever it’s announced I’m looking forward to going up against whoever it is. It doesn’t matter. If it’s Tiger, great, if it’s someone else it’s no problem either.”
