Charlie Woods, the son of 15-time major winner Tiger Woods, competed on Monday in the opening round of the 2024 U.S. Junior Amateur at the historic Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
Woods needed to finish in the top 64 of a 264-player field to advance to match play later this week. Unfortunately, he will need to post an exceptional round on the more difficult South Course on Tuesday after shooting a 12-over-par 82 on Monday, leaving him tied for 252nd place.
Fans couldn’t help but feel for the young golfer following his struggles in the opening round. The presence of hundreds, if not thousands, of spectators likely added to the stress and pressure. Jeanna Trotman of WXYZ Detroit expressed sympathy on X, saying, “Rough day for Charlie Woods. Shot an 82 to finish 12-over. Maybe it’s the parent in me, but I couldn’t stop thinking about the pressure he must be under. Surely, his blessings outweigh his struggles, but got to be tough to have a bad round on this stage with that crowd.”
It’s hard not to feel for Charlie, who earned his spot in the 2024 U.S. Junior Amateur by winning a qualifying event in Florida earlier this year. On Monday, he recorded five double-bogeys and four bogeys, managing just two birdies on the par-5 5th and 12th holes at Oakland Hills’ North Course.
Charlie is set to resume action at the 2024 U.S. Junior Amateur at 1:48 p.m. ET on Tuesday. He will start his second round on the back nine of the South Course at Oakland Hills.
