A suspected cause of death for professional golfer Grayson Murray has been reported just days after he tragically passed away at the age of 30. The two-time PGA Tour winner died on Saturday morning, May 25, and his family has confirmed that he took his own life.
New details have emerged about the circumstances of his death. According to report, the suspected cause is carbon monoxide poisoning. Police were called to Murray’s home in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, when the carbon monoxide alarm went off at 10:49 am. It is believed that Murray left his Land Rover running in the garage, causing exhaust fumes to fill his townhouse, as reported by a neighbor.
“We are conducting an investigation into the matter that occurred in our city,” said a police department spokesperson.
Murray had withdrawn from the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, just hours before his death. He had informed his playing partners that he was feeling unwell and left the course after completing 16 holes in the second round on Friday.
Murray had been open about his battles with alcohol and mental health, and he recently made a significant comeback by regaining his place on the PGA Tour and working towards sobriety.
In a heartfelt statement, Murray’s family expressed their devastation over his loss. “We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone,” his parents said. “It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but also acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare.”
They continued, “We have so many questions that have no answers. But one. Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and – it seems – by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed.”
The family also thanked the PGA Tour and the broader golf community for their support. “Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now.”
They requested privacy as they navigate this incredible tragedy and urged others to honor Grayson by showing kindness to one another. “If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else. Thank you.”
