Golito’s Red Sox Season in Doubt

Posted on March 12, 2024

Following widespread speculation, the Boston Red Sox have confirmed that pitcher Lucas Giolito will undergo surgery on his right throwing elbow. The announcement came from manager Alex Cora following the team’s spring training game against Pittsburgh on Monday.

The exact severity of Giolito’s injury remains uncertain, but it’s clear that it’s not a positive development for the team’s upcoming season. He may require full Tommy John surgery, a procedure that could jeopardize his availability for the start of the 2025 season. Alternatively, he might undergo a brace procedure, which could allow for an earlier return but still entail a significant recovery period before resuming throwing.

This setback indicates a challenging season ahead for Giolito, as ESPN’s Jeff Passan previously reported that the newly signed pitcher has a partial tear in his UCL along with a flexor tendon strain. These findings were not unexpected for the Red Sox, as Cora had expressed concerns last week when the club initially sidelined Giolito due to the elbow issue.

Giolito, who recently joined the Red Sox on a two-year deal, was anticipated to be a reliable innings eater for the team. In the 2023 season, he amassed 184 1/3 innings and struck out 204 batters. His contract reportedly includes a $19 million player option for 2025, which he is likely to exercise. However, if he undergoes Tommy John surgery, he may face a year-plus absence from the game, making the financial security of that option even more appealing.

The Red Sox will undoubtedly face challenges in Giolito’s absence, as they navigate their pitching rotation for the upcoming season. As the team awaits further updates on Giolito’s condition, their focus will be on supporting his recovery and preparing for the season ahead without one of their key acquisitions.
