In a surprising move, the Green Bay Packers have opted not to retain defensive coordinator Joe Barry for the upcoming 2024 NFL season, as reported by multiple sources. Despite the team’s impressive journey to the Divisional Round of the playoffs, head coach Matt LaFleur has decided to make a significant change in leadership on the defensive side of the ball.
The decision to part ways with Barry comes after a season filled with ups and downs for the Packers. With a shaky 6-8 start, questions arose about the team’s defensive capabilities. Notably, concerns peaked when Green Bay allowed 30 points in a Week 16 matchup against the Carolina Panthers, though they ultimately secured a 33-30 victory. The team managed to rebound with two more wins to finish the regular season at 9-8, securing a playoff berth.
Despite the defensive challenges, Barry’s unit showcased resilience in the postseason. In a stunning blowout against the Dallas Cowboys, the Packers took a commanding 27-0 lead, featuring a crucial pick-six. Although the defense performed reasonably well in the subsequent 24-21 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round, it appears LaFleur believes a change is necessary for future success.
Joe Barry, 53, served as the Packers’ defensive coordinator for three seasons, previously holding a coaching role with the Los Angeles Rams for four years. The search for a new defensive coordinator is now underway, as the Packers look to address and resolve the perceived issues that led to this significant coaching staff adjustment.
