Greg Norman’s son reveals how LIV boss gained access to Masters

Posted on April 11, 2024

Ahead of the 2024 Masters, Greg Norman was spotted strolling the grounds at Augusta National, prompting speculation about a potential shift in the tournament’s stance toward his attendance. However, it appears that Norman’s presence was not indicative of a policy change.

Since his coverage of the event for SiriusXM in 2021, Norman had not set foot at the Masters, coinciding with his appointment as CEO of LIV Golf, a move that made him a lightning rod for controversy as the face of the Saudi-backed league. Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley previously affirmed that Norman was not extended an invitation to the tournament, aiming to maintain the focus squarely on the competition.

Yes. All this is true.

My dad paid for a ticket on the secondary market to attend the Masters as a patron. He was denied one directly after going through the proper professional channels. He had to be there anyway to support the LIV players.

According to Norman’s son, Greg Norman Jr., the former major champion was once again omitted from the guest list this year. Norman Jr. confirmed reports that his father acquired tickets for Wednesday’s practice round through secondary channels, after being rebuffed via professional channels.

Norman Jr. shared insights into their experience at Augusta, noting the overwhelming support from golf enthusiasts encountered along the way. Despite facing animosity from certain quarters, Norman Jr. emphasized the predominantly positive reception they received, underscoring the widespread enthusiasm for LIV Golf and the sport as a whole.

Norman himself attested to the warm reception he received from patrons at Augusta, highlighting his presence to back the 13 LIV players, who collectively boast 10 Masters victories among them. His motivation, he stated, was simply to support and encourage these players in their pursuit of success on the hallowed greens.

While Norman has been embroiled in public disputes with the PGA Tour and its prominent figures, tensions have eased following the announcement of a merger between LIV and the PGA Tour, though details remain unresolved.

In a symbolic gesture of parity, Norman, like any other affluent individual, had to secure his access to the 2024 Masters through personal means, purchasing his ticket in the manner of any wealthy patron.

Norman’s presence at Augusta underscores the complex interplay between tradition, competition, and the evolving landscape of professional golf, with his actions reflecting both his personal commitment to the sport and his role within the contentious realm of golf administration.
