Wyndham Clark recently opened up about the controversy that arose during the Presidents Cup, where he found himself at the center of a cursing incident involving Tom Kim. Accusations were exchanged, including a since-deleted tweet that criticized Clark for his behavior during Team USA’s victory. Now that the tournament has passed, Clark is shedding light on what really happened.
The situation escalated when Si Woo Kim performed Steph Curry’s iconic celebration after an impressive shot, suggesting that Team USA was finished on that hole. Clark, along with his teammate Tony Finau, was confused by the gesture at the time. Reflecting on the moment, Clark praised Kim’s shot and acknowledged his skill, telling Golf.com:
“Si Woo’s chip-in on the 16th hole is one of the best shots I’ve ever seen up close. Si Woo is one of my favorite guys on the PGA Tour; he’s got incredible talent, and that shot was unbelievable. You could honestly make a highlight reel from that week of his top shots.”
Clark went on to explain that Kim’s celebration was likely a result of his admiration for NBA star Steph Curry, but he added that even Curry has warned against celebrating too early. Clark continued:
“So, Kim did that right in front of Tony and me, and we just looked at each other like, ‘It’s a close game. Why would you celebrate like that?’”
Despite the tension, Team USA secured yet another Presidents Cup victory under the leadership of Jim Furyk, continuing their historical dominance in the competition.
In the aftermath, Clark faced criticism from members of the International team, including Byeong Hun An, who called him out in a now-deleted tweet. Clark, seeking to clarify the situation, spoke to Golf Monthly, explaining that the International team played exceptionally well, particularly players like Tom Kim, who celebrated their achievements.
“And then there were some antics behind the scenes that weren’t shown on TV, which left us feeling frustrated. In my opinion, some of it was over the top,” Clark explained.
He went on to describe how the International team kept making “birdie after birdie” on nearly every hole, calling it an “amazing” display of skill. As for the trash talk, Clark admitted that much of the cursing was confined to their own team, but conceded that shouts of “let’s f*****g go” might have contributed to the misunderstanding with the International team.
In the end, both sides appeared to settle down as the weekend went on, with the competition taking center stage and the intensity cooling off. Ultimately, the tension didn’t overshadow Team USA’s victory, but it added a layer of drama to what was otherwise a competitive and hard-fought tournament.
