Billy Horschel claimed his second BMW PGA Championship title by defeating Rory McIlroy in dramatic fashion, sealing the win with a spectacular eagle at the second extra hole in a sudden-death playoff. McIlroy had battled back with a remarkable 50-foot eagle on the 17th hole to tie South African Thriston Lawrence at 20-under par. However, after missing a birdie chance on the 18th, McIlroy was forced into a three-man playoff with Horschel and Lawrence.
During the first playoff hole at the par-five 18th, Lawrence struggled with his second shot, which ended up in a bunker, ultimately leading to a double bogey, leaving Horschel and McIlroy to duel for the win. Both players made birdies on the first extra hole, setting up a return to the 18th for a second playoff attempt.
On the second trip down the 18th, McIlroy’s 35-foot birdie attempt narrowly missed, and Horschel responded by sinking a 30-footer for the victory. Despite the disappointment, McIlroy took the loss in stride, congratulating his friend Horschel, who expressed sympathy for McIlroy’s near misses throughout the season.
The tournament had seen McIlroy make a slow start with a bogey at the second hole but fight his way back into contention with birdies at the third and fourth. Italy’s Matteo Manassero, the overnight leader, faltered with a final-round 73 to tie for fourth, while South Africa’s Lawrence and England’s Aaron Rai remained close contenders throughout the day.
Tom McKibbin finished strong with a six-under 66, tying for 10th, while Pádraig Harrington, 53, also impressed by shooting a bogey-free 68 to share 12th place alongside Shane Lowry, who closed with a 67.
This win marked Horschel’s second triumph at the event in three years, while McIlroy’s year of near misses continued.
