The latest PGA Tour’s signature event, the Memorial Tournament, is taking place at Muirfield Village, a prestigious event hosted by Jack Nicklaus. This tournament features a 73-strong field, including 43 of the world’s top 50 golfers, all competing for a substantial overall payout of $20 million.
While this prize pool matches other signature events, the Memorial Tournament offers a unique twist due to its status as one of the three invitationals, alongside the Genesis Invitational and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Here, the winner takes home 20% of the total purse, compared to the usual 18% for other signature events. This means the champion will receive a $4 million prize, surpassing the $3.6 million typically awarded at other tournaments. Last year, Viktor Hovland won $3.6 million for his victory in the event.
Previously, the Genesis Invitational saw Hideki Matsuyama emerge victorious, while Scottie Scheffler captured his first win of the season at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, both taking home $4 million. Their respective caddies, Shota Hayafuji and Ted Scott, likely earned about $400,000 each, representing 10% of the winner’s earnings. The caddie of this week’s winner is expected to receive a similar amount.
With such a competitive field, predicting the winner and their caddie who will receive this significant payout is challenging. However, if this season’s form is any indication, Scottie Scheffler might once again be a strong contender.
