Promoter Alex Krassyuk, representing unified world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (21-0, 14KOs), remains cautious about the likelihood of a highly anticipated rematch between Usyk and rival Tyson Fury (34-0-1, 24KOs) taking place after their initial bout scheduled for May 18 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Krassyuk’s reservations stem from past setbacks, including Fury’s cut during preparation, which derailed a previously set date of February 17. Despite a swift rescheduling for May, Krassyuk still harbors doubts about the rematch materializing.
In an interview with World Boxing News, Krassyuk indicated that while the two heavyweights have a two-fight agreement slated to conclude by the end of 2024, he lacks confidence in Fury honoring his commitment.
He stated, “Theoretically, the rematch should happen before the end of 2024. However, we all know that Tyson is not the world’s best rematch-er. After he loses to Usyk in the first bout, you cannot predict his behavior at all.”
Krassyuk expressed concerns over Fury’s history of withdrawals, emphasizing, “The man has withdrawn four times in a row already. We have even decided to stop all the jokes and criticisms towards Luke [Fury] to support his confidence.”
Turki Alalshikh, following the rescheduling of the undisputed encounter for May 18, issued a warning to Fury, threatening a $10 million financial penalty should he withdraw again.
Krassyuk reiterated Usyk’s goal of securing the fourth heavyweight belt and completing the undisputed title. He stated, “Usyk’s goal is to get the fourth heavyweight belt and to complete the undisputed. After accomplishing this mission, other options can be considered.”
In closing, Krassyuk expressed willingness to support Fury in getting into the ring with Usyk and suggested that once Usyk achieves his undisputed title, alternative options could be explored.
