French golfer Romain Langasque faced controversy after being accused of rage quitting during his first round at The Open Championship. Langasque, who was 4-over par through the first seven holes, hit his tee shot on the par-3 eighth—a short 76-meter hole—landing 33 meters short of the hole. Although his tee shot wasn’t broadcast, his second shot from the fescue rough was shown, where he hit it thin, sending the ball across to the other side of the green.
Microphones captured his frustrated reaction as he took off his hat, muttered “f— it, I’m out,” shook his playing partners’ hands, and walked off Royal Troon. However, Langasque later took to social media to clarify that a back injury, not frustration, forced him to withdraw. He explained on X, “Hurt my back on hole 4 and it became (worse and worse) after it … see you next year.”
Langasque had a mixed start, with a bogey on the first hole, a birdie on the second, and a par on the third, but bogeyed three of the next four holes before deciding to withdraw.

Meanwhile, Daniel Brown had a memorable debut at The Open. He finished with a 6-under 65, securing a one-shot lead over Shane Lowry, who posted a bogey-free 66 for his best start in 46 majors. Brown, a one-time winner on the European Tour, had struggled recently, failing to make the cut in seven consecutive tournaments since March. However, he earned his spot at Royal Troon through final qualifying and had a decent showing at the Scottish Open, finishing 61st.
The day was dominated by challenging wind conditions, catching many players off guard. Rory McIlroy struggled, shooting 78 with two double bogeys, while US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau recorded a 76 after going out in 42. Tiger Woods also had a tough start, posting a 78, his highest opening round in a major since an 80 at the 2015 US Open at Chambers Bay.
