Bryson DeChambeau, sporting a new moustache, engaged in some light-hearted banter with a female reporter ahead of the LIV Golf Houston event. The 30-year-old golfer revealed that he decided to grow the moustache after someone suggested it might suit him. The look also aligned with a vintage-style YouTube video he recently filmed, which featured him using old-school golf equipment.
DeChambeau’s performance in Houston will determine if he keeps the moustache for next week’s US Open at Pinehurst No.2. He arrives at the Golf Club of Houston as one of the favorites, riding high from an impressive second-place finish behind Xander Schauffele at the US PGA Championship. This marked his second consecutive top-10 finish in the 2024 majors, adding to his four top-10 finishes in the first seven LIV Golf League events of the year. Notably, he also secured a T6 finish at The Masters.
In Houston, DeChambeau shares the joint-tournament favorite position at 8/1 odds with Jon Rahm, a recent star signing for the LIV Golf League. Although he hasn’t won an individual event since September 2023, his recent form has led some to consider him “arguably the hottest golfer on the planet right now.” DeChambeau humorously attributed his newfound appeal to his moustache, a comment that elicited laughter from the reporter.
Reflecting on the upcoming US Open at Pinehurst No.2, DeChambeau expressed his fondness for the course. He reminisced about playing there with his college team from Southern Methodist University (SMU) and highlighted his appreciation for the challenges the course presents. He described Pinehurst as a “ball striker’s course” and emphasized the importance of iron play. DeChambeau also mentioned a recent visit to the course earlier in the year, where he enjoyed the conditions and the test of golf it offers.
When asked about his moustache, DeChambeau explained its origins in more detail. He started growing it after someone suggested he might look good with one. The decision coincided with a YouTube video he made in a vintage golf outfit, complete with hickory clubs and a beret. He noted that the moustache complemented the old-school look but joked that he might shave it off if he performs poorly in the tournament.
In addition to his personal updates, DeChambeau announced a change to his Crushers GC lineup for the Houston event. Due to an injury to Charles Howell III, he brought in John Catlin, a three-time DP World Tour winner and the current leader of the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit.
As DeChambeau prepares for the LIV Golf Houston event and the US Open at Pinehurst No.2, his recent performances and new moustache have certainly made him a player to watch.
