Justin Thomas held back tears during an emotional interview at the PGA Championship on Sunday. Playing in front of a home crowd at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, the two-time major winner briefly hinted at mounting a challenge.
Entering the final round five shots behind the leaders, Thomas’s three-under-par round of 68 was not enough to close the gap. He finished eight shots behind the winner, Xander Schauffele, in a tie for eighth place.
Despite not clinching the title, Thomas received a rapturous reception from the record-breaking PGA Championship crowd on the 18th green. This overwhelming support brought him to the brink of tears. Speaking to Sky Sports after his round, Thomas became emotional. “That was pretty special walking up 18,” he said. “Obviously wish I could’ve had a chance to win. It was just so much fun. I can’t put it into words.”
Noticing his emotional state, the reporter asked Thomas to explain his feelings. Struggling to hold back tears, the 31-year-old responded, “Yeah. It’s just special. It was a fun week. I’m just glad I can do this and play in front of my hometown.”
Thomas, who won his second PGA Championship title in 2022, has faced a challenging year, currently ranked world No. 31. Before this week, he missed the cut in four of the last five majors and finished T65 in the other. However, he drew energy from the supportive crowd this week, delivering several incredible shots, including a stunning flop shot on Saturday.
Reflecting on the week, Thomas’s emotions highlighted his deep connection to his hometown and the significance of performing well in front of a supportive audience.
