Jannik Sinner, the No. 1 seed, claimed his first US Open title by defeating No. 12 seed Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 on Sunday afternoon. This victory marks Sinner’s second major title of the year, following his Australian Open win in January, making him the first Italian man to win the US Open. He joins Flavia Pennetta, who became the only Italian woman to do so in 2015.
For Fritz, his appearance in the US Open final was historic as well, becoming the first American man to reach a Grand Slam final since Andy Roddick in 2009 at Wimbledon and the first to reach the US Open final since Roddick’s 2006 appearance.
At just 23 years old, Sinner has become the youngest man to win both major hard-court titles in the same season. He joins an exclusive group of tennis legends to achieve this feat: Novak Djokovic (2011, 2015, 2023), Roger Federer (2004, 2006-07), and Mats Wilander (1988). Sinner’s rapid rise continued as he became the first man since Guillermo Vilas in 1977 to win his first two major finals in a single calendar year. His 11-match winning streak, dating back to the Cincinnati Open, has also been one of the highlights of his impressive year.
Sinner’s US Open win makes him the 11th different men’s champion at the tournament since 2008, highlighting the unpredictability and competitive depth of the event. Notably, no man has successfully defended his US Open title since Roger Federer last achieved the feat. This victory also makes Sinner the first World No. 1 to win the men’s singles title since Rafael Nadal in 2017.
In terms of success this season, Sinner now leads the ATP Tour with six titles, further cementing his position as one of the dominant forces in men’s tennis.
The final began with Sinner breaking Fritz’s serve right away, establishing a 1-0 lead. Fritz fought back and leveled the match at 2-2, but Sinner saved break points in the fifth game and broke Fritz again to regain a 4-3 advantage. The Italian then won four consecutive games to close out the first set 6-3 in 41 minutes. In the opening set, Sinner converted three out of seven break points, while Fritz struggled, landing only 38% of his first serves.
In the second set, both players held their serves steadily until Sinner broke Fritz at 15 in the tenth game to secure a 6-4 set victory, extending his lead to two sets to none in just 75 minutes.
The third set brought more drama as Sinner fought off love-40 in the opening game to hold serve. Fritz, fueled by the home crowd, managed to break Sinner to go up 4-3. Serving for the set at 5-4, Fritz was broken by Sinner, who then held his serve and broke Fritz once more to clinch the match at 7-5.
Sinner’s triumph in New York marked his 23rd match win in Grand Slam events this year, placing him in elite company alongside legends such as Djokovic, Federer, Nadal, Murray, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Mats Wilander, Ivan Lendl, and Rod Laver—all of whom have achieved 23+ Grand Slam wins in a single season.
With this victory, Sinner becomes the fifth active player to win multiple major titles, joining the ranks of Djokovic (24), Nadal (22), Carlos Alcaraz (4), and Stan Wawrinka (3).
Remarkably, 2024 also marked the third time in the Open Era that all four major titles have been won by players aged 23 and under. Sinner, 23, took home titles at the Australian Open and US Open, while the 21-year-old Alcaraz claimed victories at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
