World number one Jannik Sinner expressed on Monday that he is going through “a very difficult moment” and struggling with sleepless nights due to his doping case. The 23-year-old is facing renewed scrutiny after the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announced on Saturday that it is seeking a ban of up to two years following two positive tests for traces of the steroid clostebol in March.
In August, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) cleared the Italian of any wrongdoing. Shortly after, Sinner claimed his second major title by winning the US Open. The ITIA accepted his explanation that the substance entered his body when his physiotherapist applied a spray containing the steroid to treat a cut, followed by massage and sports therapy.
Speaking in Beijing after his 6-2, 7-6 (8/6) quarter-final win over Jiri Lehecka, Sinner said, “This is not a situation I want to be in. It’s a very delicate, difficult, and unusual case. But I keep reminding myself that I’ve done nothing wrong.”
