Forget the couch—Jason Day has found himself spending the night in his RV in the driveway, thanks to a suggestion from his wife. The 13-time PGA Tour winner isn’t in trouble; instead, this unusual sleeping arrangement is part of a strategy.
Day discussed the setup just before the Memorial Tournament, which takes place near his home, a mere 30-minute drive from Muirfield Village. The arrangement, while unconventional, has a purpose.
Typically, Day stays in an RV during PGA Tour events. Despite many golfers claiming the advantage of sleeping in their own beds at home tournaments, Day has never experienced this benefit. His wife, Ellie, proposed a change to this routine.
“Thirty-minute drive, not too bad,” Day shared with Ron Green on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio. “I am staying in my bus. In my driveway, though.”
“Staying in your bus, in your driveway?” Green inquired. “Is there a story behind that? A reason behind that?”
“My wife suggested it,” Day explained. “I’ve had poor results here in the past, and she thinks I’m too relaxed and out of structure when I stay at home. She suggested treating this as a tournament week, so we parked the bus in the driveway, and I’m staying there.”
This experimental approach might seem wild, but it’s aimed at improving Day’s performance. Historically, his results at the Memorial Tournament have been underwhelming, with only one top-10 finish and two top-25 finishes in 14 starts. His best performance was a T-4 in 2020, during the unusual Covid-19 season.
Now, if Day’s kids need him during the night, they’ll find him in the driveway. And if he wants a midnight snack, the kitchen is just a short walk away.
