Jessica Pegula, the top-ranked American tennis player, has once again cemented her status as a formidable force on the court by reaching the quarterfinals of the US Open for the second time. Despite her impressive achievements, a persistent narrative surrounding her perceived wealth often overshadows her accomplishments.
In her recent match, Pegula secured a decisive 6-4, 6-2 victory over Diana Shnaider, demonstrating her exceptional form. However, it wasn’t just her on-court prowess that drew attention. Pegula was spotted taking the subway to the match, a choice she admits preferring over driving. When asked about this, she joked that perhaps a chauffeured limousine would have been more fitting, given the rumors that often follow her.
Like her fellow quarterfinalist Emma Navarro, Pegula was born into a life of considerable privilege. As the daughter of Buffalo Bills owners Terry and Kim Pegula, she is often labeled the “wealthiest tennis player” or even a “billionaire tennis player.” Her father, Terry Pegula, is estimated to be worth $7.7 billion. However, Jessica Pegula has been clear that her family’s wealth has had little to no influence on her tennis career. In a sport where top-level athletes already earn substantial sums, she finds the assumptions about her lifestyle particularly amusing.
In a recent interview, Pegula addressed these misconceptions directly. “I did some social media thing the other day, and they asked what the most annoying thing was. It’s that people think I have a butler, that I get chauffeured around, that I have a private limo, or that I fly private everywhere. I’m definitely not like that,” she said with a laugh.
Pegula went on to express her bemusement at the exaggerated image people have of her life. “People can think what they want, I don’t know. I just think it’s kind of funny. Like a butler? I read these comments like, ‘she probably has this and that,’ and I’m like, no, not at all. But maybe I should, I don’t know at this point. Is that what you want me to do? Just do all these crazy things? It’s a little annoying, but I just think it’s kind of funny. I don’t really even know anybody who lives like that. It’s outrageous.”
Despite the perceptions, Pegula remains grounded, focusing on her career and proving herself on the court, rather than letting the assumptions about her wealth define her.
